CANCUN & RIVIERA MAYA
ABOUT CANCUN
Cancun is located in the state of Quintana Roo in southeast Mexico, in the Yucatan peninsula, on the Caribbean coast also known as the Riviera Maya.
Cancun is an island connected to the mainland by two bridges and divided into two main parts: el centro or downtown Cancun, in the mainland, where most of the residents live, home to many smaller hotels, restaurants and shops. The other part is the famous Hotel Zone, the main tourist area located on the island, jutting out into the Caribbean Sea, where all the luxury hotels and modern shopping malls are to be found.
There are many reasons for Cancun's popularity as a tourist destination: its gorgeous beaches with clear turquoise waters, excellent Cancun resort hotels offering a full range of amenities, gourmet restaurants, and vibrant night life. Further, Cancun, Mexico has great weather, with an average temperature of 80 degrees F (27 degrees C) and 240 days of sunshine per year.
ABOUT THE RIVIERA MAYA
The Mayan Riviera or Riviera Maya stretches along 87 miles of Mexican Caribbean coastline in the southeastern section of the Yucatán Peninsula. Warm weather conditions, endless white sandy beaches, and the region's network of underground rivers, lagoons and cenotes (sinkholes) with mangroves and jungle vegetation, provide the ideal surroundings in which to experience nature at its purest. The entrance and exit of the underground rivers of Playa del Carmen and Tulum often lead to caverns, an underwater world filled with stalactites and stalagmites and clear waters with excellent visibility.
The Riviera Maya starts 10.5 miles south of Cancun's International Airport. It includes magical and fascinating places like Playa del Carmen, Puerto Aventuras, Akumal and Tulum which is the only ancient Mayan city in the region with the ocean and Cozumel Island as a background. The southern end of the Riviera Park is the town of Carrillo Puerto, with its colonial air and Mayan traditions.
Playa del Carmen or Playa, as it's called by the locals, has acquired international fame in the unprecedented short span of only ten years. Playa del Carmen is a fascinating town that attracts visitors from all over the globe who want to see for themselves what it's all about: to immersing in its atmosphere and enjoying the bohemian nightlife on the sandy shores.
